Initial Keywords 

1.      You are going to expand the list in the future, but for now, take a piece of paper and write down 9-10 keywords that directly describe your product or product category.

2.      Narrow down the list to 4 that are the absolute best.

3.      With this list, go to WordTracker and use the keyword suggestion tool for suggestions. This will give you the top 100 keywords related to the ones you've chosen. (you can also buy a tool that will make this process much smoother at WordTracker as well)

4.      Copy all the results into a spreadsheet. I use Excel and to get the keywords to list right I have to paste them "as text." To do this just right click the cell you want to put them in and click "paste special..." Then choose "text." If you use another spreadsheet you will have to figure it out.  

5.      Once you have an extremely long list of keywords, go through them on by one and eliminate any that do not describe your product. You may need to do this a couple of times until you list is down around 30 or less BEST keywords for your product.

6.      With this short list, Google each word and determine which of these keywords have the least competition. Put all the keywords into categories of less than 500,000, 300,000 and 100,000 results. I do this by changing the font color of the keyword in each of the categories. You will want to use the keywords in these categories if they describe your product well. Using these will allow you to get ranked on the search engines quicker than focusing on the more competitive keywords.

7.      You will refer back to this document as you design the content for your website.
